For a first visit, choose Ueno for a straightforward Narita connection, Shinagawa for Haneda and onward bullet trains, or Shinjuku for western Tokyo and evenings out. The best place to stay in Tokyo near public transport is the one that reduces transfers on your actual itinerary, not necessarily the district with the largest station. 123

A hotel can be close to a station entrance but inconvenient for the platform you need. Before comparing room prices, test three journeys: arrival with luggage, a typical sightseeing morning, and the return from dinner. That small exercise is more useful than choosing a neighbourhood because a booking website labels it "central."

Ueno and Okachimachi: a strong starting point for Narita arrivals

Ueno works particularly well when your plans mix museums, eastern Tokyo and travel through Narita Airport. Keisei's Skyliner serves Keisei-Ueno and Nippori; JR and subway routes provide the onward city connections. The official area guide also places Ueno Park, its museums and the Ameyoko shopping area within the neighbourhood. 145

The important qualification is the station name. Keisei-Ueno, JR Ueno and the subway entrances are not interchangeable hotel drop-off points. Open the walking route from the arrival platform's station exit to your accommodation. A hotel convenient for the park may involve a different approach from one near Okachimachi.

For a short stay, this area is a sensible choice when several activities are already nearby. You can make the first or last outing local instead of immediately crossing the city. For a predominantly Shibuya-and-Shinjuku itinerary, however, compare the repeated east-to-west journeys before deciding that an easy airport arrival should determine the entire stay. 46

Choose the hotel after identifying your main station, not before. "Ueno area" is a useful search zone, but it is not a guarantee of a short walk to every operator's entrance.

Shinjuku: excellent connections, but choose the correct side

Shinjuku is a practical base for visitors who expect to spend evenings in western Tokyo and want substantial shopping and dining choices close to their hotel. GO TOKYO distinguishes the skyscraper district west of the station from the wider entertainment and shopping areas around it. 3

Its transport advantage is the variety of useful routes, but that does not make every transfer effortless. JR's network and the subway map show several lines and nearby stations; the name "Shinjuku" should be the beginning of your hotel research, not the final test. 46

Save the specific exit recommended by the hotel. Compare it with the line you expect to use most often. A room described as a few minutes from one exit may require a substantially different walk when you arrive on another railway.

For travellers with children or several suitcases, I would favour a simpler entrance-to-hotel route over a small saving on the room. For visitors planning late dinners nearby, staying on the appropriate side of the station can also be more valuable than having one extra rail line within reach. Those are itinerary-based recommendations, not a claim that one side is universally quieter or safer.

Shinagawa: particularly useful for Haneda and onward travel

Shinagawa deserves consideration when Tokyo is one stop on a longer Japan trip. The station serves the Tokaido Shinkansen towards Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, while Keikyu connects it with Haneda. JR city services provide additional links within Tokyo. 274

This combination can remove an unnecessary luggage transfer. Rather than arriving at one station, moving to a distant hotel and returning across Tokyo for the next train, you can choose a base that fits both arrival and departure.

The trade-off is personal rather than absolute: a transport-efficient hotel does not automatically sit beside the sights or evening streets you most want to explore. Put your planned restaurants and attractions on the same map as the station. A good departure morning should not require several inconvenient sightseeing days.

Also distinguish a hotel near Shinagawa Station from one elsewhere in the wider Shinagawa area. The district name covers more than the immediate station surroundings; the tourism authority's guide includes the separate Tennozu waterfront area. 2

Tokyo Station, Nihonbashi and Asakusa: compare the actual route

For a rail-focused itinerary, accommodation around Tokyo Station can simplify certain onward journeys. But "near Tokyo Station" still needs an exact address and entrance. A hotel near the useful departure side is a different proposition from one requiring a long walk through or around the station complex.

Nihonbashi can be a good alternative when your sightseeing suits its subway connections. Do not assume that proximity on a neighbourhood map means a convenient underground transfer with luggage. Use the station layouts alongside the network map; they answer different questions. 68

Asakusa is worth considering when you prefer to begin and end the day in eastern Tokyo. Its Ginza and Toei Asakusa line connections serve a different travel pattern from a hotel on the JR Yamanote line. The Tsukuba Express station called Asakusa is also separate from the subway stations of that name. 489

That distinction matters when a hotel advertises "Asakusa Station, five minutes." Ask which station and which exit. A convenient route to one railway does not automatically make the hotel equally convenient for another.

Run a door-to-platform test before booking

A useful comparison includes more than walking distance. Check whether the hotel's recommended route uses steps, whether a lift entrance requires a detour, and whether your arrival train actually stops at the station you have selected. Consult the operator's station information rather than relying solely on the shortest route suggested by a general map. 6

For an illustrative five-night stay, a hotel that adds ten minutes to both the morning departure and evening return uses an extra 100 minutes across five sightseeing days. That is a calculation, not a measured Tokyo average, but it explains why a slightly cheaper room can be poor value for a tightly scheduled trip.

Test an evening journey as well as a daytime one. Use your intended date and departure time in the route planner. A direct daytime connection is not a promise that the same journey will be available after a late concert or dinner.

Finally, choose accommodation before committing to a transport pass. The Tokyo Subway Ticket covers Tokyo Metro and Toei subway lines, not every railway appearing on the city's transport map. A hotel whose most useful journeys are on JR may still be an excellent choice, but a subway-only pass will not turn those journeys into included rides. 10

The strongest hotel choice makes your likely movements simple. It need not have the biggest station, the largest number of lines or the most fashionable district name.
