For Tokyo to Hakone by train, choose a direct Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto when convenience and a reserved seat matter most. Travellers starting near Tokyo or Shinagawa stations should also compare JR services to Odawara, followed by a local connection. The crucial ticket detail is that Romancecar requires a limited-express charge as well as a base fare. [1][2]
Your accommodation's location matters just as much as your Tokyo departure station. Hakone-Yumoto is a gateway, not the destination for every hotel. Gora, Sengokuhara and the Lake Ashi area require different onward journeys, which the local transport network treats as distinct districts. [3]
Choose the route from your actual starting point
From Shinjuku, start with Odakyu. A direct Romancecar to Hakone-Yumoto removes the need to change at Odawara. Check the destination on the particular service: Romancecar is a train family serving several routes, not a guarantee that every departure reaches Hakone-Yumoto. Odakyu separately lists services toward Odawara, Hakone-Yumoto, Enoshima and Gotemba. [1]
The ordinary Odakyu alternative avoids the limited-express supplement but requires following the appropriate connections. It is a sensible budget choice when you have light luggage and no need for a reserved seat. Compare the full journey shown for your departure time, including transfers, rather than comparing only the first train's departure.
From eastern or southern central Tokyo, compare JR to Odawara. The official Hakone access guide includes the JR approach via Odawara, with a connection toward Hakone-Yumoto. [2] A fast train can be attractive, but the relevant comparison is hotel door to hotel door. Crossing Tokyo to reach Shinjuku may erase a cheaper fare's practical advantage; conversely, paying for a faster first leg may save little when the onward connection is awkward.
For travellers continuing west after Hakone, plan the departure through Odawara separately. A product built around returning to Shinjuku may be a poor fit when that return will never be used. Do not buy a round trip simply because it is the most prominent option on a tourism page.
Understand the two parts of a Romancecar ticket
Odakyu's published adult Shinjuku–Hakone-Yumoto fare table separates the basic journey from the reserved limited-express service. The following are the listed one-way amounts, not live seat-availability quotes. [1]
| Ticket component | Adult price |
|---|---|
| Base fare paid by IC card | JPY 1,261 |
| Base fare bought as a paper ticket | JPY 1,270 |
| Ticketless limited-express charge | JPY 1,150 |
| Limited-express charge bought through the standard ticket channel | JPY 1,200 |
A ticketless reservation plus an IC base fare therefore totals JPY 2,411 one way. A paper base ticket plus the JPY 1,200 supplement totals JPY 2,470. These are calculated combinations of the published figures; they do not mean that buying the reservation alone pays the complete journey.
This is the source of many apparently conflicting online prices. One page may show only the limited-express supplement, another the total, and a third a pass plus a seat reservation. Before comparing, identify which components are included.
An IC card can pay the basic ride but does not itself reserve a Romancecar seat. Similarly, a qualifying pass can cover the base journey while leaving the limited-express charge payable. Keep the reservation details available for the booked train and seat, and use the correct ticket or pass for the gates.
Decide whether the Hakone Freepass matches your day
The Hakone Freepass combines eligible local transport with an optional Odakyu return journey. Current published adult prices, effective from 1 October 2025, are JPY 7,100 for two days from Shinjuku and JPY 7,500 for three days. Starting at Odawara, the corresponding prices are JPY 6,000 and JPY 6,400. Older JPY 6,100 Shinjuku prices belong to the previous tariff. [4]
Coverage includes designated Hakone trains, cable car, ropeway, sightseeing cruise and bus services. The Shinjuku version includes one return journey on the Odakyu section to Odawara - not unlimited daily trips between Tokyo and Hakone. Romancecar supplements remain extra, and the pass does not cover Izu-Hakone Bus services. [4]
For a two-day Shinjuku pass with ticketless Romancecar reservations in both directions, the calculated adult total is JPY 9,400: JPY 7,100 plus two JPY 1,150 supplements. With JPY 1,200 supplements, the equivalent calculation is JPY 9,500. Neither total includes hotel accommodation, meals or every attraction's admission.
The pass deserves a proper comparison when you intend to combine several local modes. It is less obviously valuable for a simple return to Hakone-Yumoto, lunch and a nearby bath. List the transport you will genuinely use, price that itinerary and compare; do not add journeys merely to justify a pass already bought.
A two-day product can still be purchased for a one-day visit, but its duration does not prove it saves money. Conversely, an overnight stay does not automatically require the three-day version. Match the validity dates to the travel days, not the number of nights written in the hotel booking.
Leave time beyond Hakone-Yumoto
Map the final connection before booking the outward train. The official station and area guides distinguish the mountain railway toward Gora, onward cable-car and ropeway links, and bus corridors toward other districts. [3] A hotel described broadly as "in Hakone" can be well beyond the train's terminus.
For a ryokan with dinner included, work backwards from its requested arrival time. Allow for the local transfer, walking from the stop and checking in. The last possible train from Tokyo is not necessarily the last sensible train for that accommodation.
Keep the first afternoon modest. One attraction followed by an unhurried hotel arrival is often more rewarding than attempting a complete sightseeing circuit immediately after the journey. On the second day, store or forward luggage through a service your accommodation confirms, rather than assuming every stop has available lockers.
Weather can also change the local itinerary: the Freepass operator explicitly notes that services may be suspended in adverse conditions. [4] A train ticket to Hakone does not guarantee an operating ropeway or a clear mountain view. Maintain a ground-level alternative instead of treating the entire circuit as compulsory.
Book the journey in the right order
First establish the overnight location, onward destination and any fixed meal or check-in commitment. Next choose the Tokyo–Odawara or Tokyo–Hakone-Yumoto route. Only then decide whether individual tickets, an Odawara-area pass or a Shinjuku-origin pass best matches the trip.
For Romancecar, purchase the specific train reservation and arrange the separate basic fare or qualifying pass. Verify both outward and return dates. A convenient departure is more useful than an attractive train photograph attached to a service that leaves from the wrong station or terminates elsewhere.
Families should also check seat requirements rather than assuming every young child travels without a ticket. Odakyu states that a child under six occupying a limited-express seat needs the appropriate child base fare and limited-express ticket. [1] That detail can change both the booking and the cost comparison.
Choose the direct train for simplicity, the ordinary route for a lower fare, or the JR approach when it better matches your Tokyo base and onward travel. Once the ticket components and final hotel connection are clear, the journey becomes much less complicated than the overlapping passes and product names initially suggest.
