Tokyo in October is a strong choice for walking, museums and seasonal events, but cooler weather does not mean a reliably dry month or peak autumn leaves everywhere. For late October 2026, the film festival and Roppongi Art Night are useful anchors. Pack layers and rain protection, then keep at least one outdoor day movable. [1][2][3]

The month works particularly well when you enjoy the city between attractions: a neighbourhood walk, a bookshop stop or an unhurried meal can be as important as the ticketed event. Resist turning the improved walking weather into a reason to fill every hour.

What October weather actually means

Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 Tokyo normals give a mean temperature of 18.0°C, average daily highs of 22.0°C and lows of 14.8°C. The corresponding normal monthly rainfall is 234.8 mm. These are long-term statistics, not a forecast or temperature limits for an individual day. [1]

A light jacket and adjustable layers are more practical than dressing for one fixed temperature. You may want less clothing while walking in the afternoon and more while waiting outside in the evening. Keep a compact umbrella or rain shell accessible rather than buried at the bottom of the bag.

Be careful when comparing weather summaries. GO TOKYO's current October page explicitly bases its figures on 2025 observations; those are not the same dataset as a 30-year climate normal. A lower rainfall total in one year does not establish that October is generally a dry month. [4]

My planning recommendation is to reserve a museum or other indoor activity for the least promising forecast day, while leaving a park or neighbourhood walk flexible. For a mountain outing west of central Tokyo, plan clothing and timing separately rather than assuming the city forecast describes the whole route.

Do not buy the trip solely for central-city red leaves

October brings an autumn atmosphere before every central Tokyo garden reaches its best colour. GO TOKYO identifies November as the main season for the city's colourful foliage and ginkgo avenues. Timing varies, so an October holiday should have other reasons to succeed even when the trees remain largely green. [4]

That is not an argument against visiting gardens. Choose them for the landscape, paths and setting, and treat early colour as a bonus. A park that is enjoyable without a specific photograph is a better fit than a long detour built around an unconfirmed peak.

For a dedicated foliage excursion, use current observations for the particular place and elevation. Do not treat a broad "Japan autumn" map as evidence that central Tokyo, Mount Takao and a more distant mountain destination are at the same stage.

Avoid combining a full mountain day with a late ticketed performance simply because both appear in an October list. Allow time for the return, a meal and a change of clothes. The best seasonal day is one you can enjoy without watching the clock continuously.

Film festival tickets: go to the correct seller

The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival runs from 26 October to 4 November 2026. By this guide's publication on 28 October, it is under way. Select a screening by film, language, subtitle information and venue, rather than assuming every programme is equally accessible to an English-speaking visitor. [2]

The practical detail is where to buy: festival tickets are sold through the official online system or the festival ticket centre outside Yurakucho Station, not at each participating cinema's ordinary box office. Going to the right theatre without a ticket does not guarantee that its usual counter can help. [2]

Leave room around the screening for any advertised discussion and for travel between venues. A programme with a guest appearance may appeal for different reasons from a film-only screening, but an advertised guest should not be treated as a personal meeting opportunity.

For a short stay, choose one film you genuinely want to see and build a nearby meal or walk around it. Booking several screenings in different parts of the programme can make sense for a film-focused trip, but it changes the character of a general sightseeing holiday.

Roppongi Art Night offers a specific late-night opportunity

Roppongi Art Night takes place on 31 October–1 November 2026, with core activity from 17:00 on Saturday to 06:00 on Sunday. It combines installations and performances across the district; individual works and venues have their own schedules. An all-night event does not mean every participating building is open continuously. [3]

Mori Art Museum has announced a particularly useful offer: from 22:00 on 31 October, a JPY1,000 combined ticket covers the Mariko Mori exhibition and Tokyo City View. Sales are at the designated Mori Tower counter, not online, and the applicable window ends at 05:30 on 1 November. The special ticket does not include the Wave UFO pod experience. [5]

There is also an important age condition. The offer is not sold to under-18s, and the museum states that under-18s cannot enter during the 23:00–04:00 late-night period even with a guardian. Families should choose earlier programming rather than assuming an accompanying adult removes that restriction. [5]

For adults staying late, decide how you will return before the evening starts. A district-wide overnight event is not evidence that ordinary rail services run all night. A nearby hotel, a planned taxi or staying until an appropriate morning connection are different choices with different costs.

Halloween can change the journey even when you are not celebrating

Shibuya police have announced traffic measures around the station from the evening of 30 October to the early morning of 1 November 2026. Some streets will close to vehicles, and further controls can respond to conditions. A normal taxi pickup point may therefore be inconvenient or unavailable. [6]

Tokyu Bus also announces diversions from approximately 16:00 on 30 and 31 October, including suspended or relocated stops. Travellers staying nearby should save the relevant route information rather than discovering the change while carrying luggage. [7]

Choose an organised event when a Halloween celebration is the goal, and make its admission and return arrangements part of the plan. Do not assume that gathering at a famous crossing provides a managed festival experience.

Shape the month around your interests

For art and cinema, late October 2026 has unusually clear reasons to stay in the city: an active film festival and the Roppongi programme. For mostly outdoor sightseeing, keep the itinerary adaptable to rain. For foliage alone, be realistic about the limits of central-city October colour.

Book the scarce thing first - a particular screening, exhibition slot or room that fits your evening plan - then leave space around it. Tokyo in October is rewarding precisely because you can spend more time exploring comfortably; it loses that advantage when every walk becomes a rushed connection between reservations.
